Anime Fall 2023 Review: Largely meh, but a few stand-out stars, Frieren and The Apothecary Diaries. I also really like Under Ninja, but could see as to how that might be a particular taste. As is Let Me Check the Walkthrough First and The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch. I didn't think they were great, but they seemed to be widely disliked, which I disagree with. Then there's the WTF tier: Migi&Dali (bonus points for the ending), KamiErabi GOD.app, The Kingdoms of Ruin (minus points for Mopey), 16bit Sensation: Another Layer, Protocol: Rain (bonus points for the casual nudity). These were of varying low degrees of watchability, but also at some point went completely insane, which I appreciated. The dependable workhorse tier is Umamusume, Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions, Dead Mount Death Play (this not being WTF is a downgrade from the first season, although bonus points for having a somewhat tied up ending.), SPY x FAMILY, My Daughter Left the Nest (etc). No peaks, no valleys, no point, but at least does what it set out to do. The generally disappointing tier is Ancient Magus Bride (same as last time), GOBSLAY (completely neutered, but still has the content warning), Shield Hero (basically filler episodes), Faraway Paladin (same), Shangri-La Frontier (I do like that there's the real world, but no real point so far, though there is more), Tearmoon Empire (just insufficient?), SHY (never really got anywhere). I've heard there are other good shows, but not on Crunchyroll, and I've given up on the streaming wars. I'll get to it eventually. #anime

The netracells are super easy. I don't know what that warning was going on about. And by easy I mean Kullervo's overshield (+++str, -eff -dur), the Nami Solo with the melee influence r3, and just because it likes a crowd, the Catabolist and the new mod. I also had the boar prime incarnon, but mostly tried not to use it because it was my go-to for the assassinate missions I've been doing for rep and the event. I could use more armor strip, but the debuffs don't matter, nor the enemy level. Got 2 shards, one tau-forged. Still looking to put a double green on Mesa. I'd bring Hydroid to lock down the entire security zone, but I worry about the health pool. Or Frost? Harder to build the shield, but massive armor strip. Also since Kahl randomly started to work, I should do that for a few months for shards. I got everything else already.
The continued story line has been nice. The whole reason I was in the netracell was to get the entrati thing for rank 5. I got a ton of them, funded the entire Jahu Gargoyle, then they never dropped again. I need at least 7 more for the frame, too. #warframe
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fir: The full screen view has something like 1/6th the screen cut off, including the e in the title. Definitely Zach Snyder's Star Wars so it's boring and there's slow mo, and weird Orange County politics. It is at least lit. I complain about a lot of things being the middle part of a trilogy, but this is like the first part of a 9 part epic. It's got time for a few digressions, but also seems incredibly small. The big death star battle was one dude in a turret. #tv

Scavenger's Reign: Excellent SF Weirdness. The animation is not the greatest, but it is well directed, and the writing is great, and the concept is out of this world. Very "Made in Abyss", with the Hollow and the flowers of eternal fortune and the beautiful world that is also extravagantly deadly. Probably should not attempt to eat melted cheese (or anything) while watching this. #tv

other warframe story ideas for the public domain: Kill the grineer queen, but they want revenge, devolve into grineer/infested hybrids. (Update the grineer base with bioreactor node, spawn different, harder enemies on the other grineer tilesets after you complete the quest, like the Stalker or Acolytes). Now that you have mastered the void, go visit the sentients, use the choice you made with Lotus/Natah to win them over: 'look, this human accepted me as I am'/'look, we have exceeded our programming, and this human accepted me'/'look, I became something the humans could love, we can coexist'. Then defend them from the terraforming bio-monsters the sentients were using for practice. (This could be an open world with Attack on Titan style flesh monsters instead of Eidolons, or an entire new star chart/tileset(s)) And there's still my alt-duviri idea, a third universe where you mastered the void but went insane, and the drifter has to fix it alone, until the operator masters the void in universe1 and can send frames/angels over until you kill/rehabilitate yourself, collapsing universe3 into an expanded undercroft or something. (so story mode, a few small maps, not many new models) #warframe
Possibly simpler story: The Entrati family notices some noise in the basement, send you in, waves of robots, find the smashed sarcophagus & lab, wake everybody up, "you killed papa", "no, he fled Him, back in time", artifact 1999, "too late!", "We'll send you back in time, but you need to get better, have our melee training" It makes the melee grind the point, it doesn't use a 3rd party plot catharsis to paper over the dream image they committed themselves to, it doesn't actually involve the Man at all. Because what we saw kind of made me more sympathetic to the other me. I know Tenshin says He must not be released, but Tenshin also says that weird thing about staunching the wounds of my comrades, so I'm thinking maybe he isn't the last word on matters medical or metaphysical. It seems obvious that what comes out of the void is a warped mirror of what went in. Maybe the answer shouldn't be hitting it with a bigger stick. Dive deeper than Entrati, embrace what you find, come back with your own angels, and more of a door than a wall. You might fight one or the other for cinematic purposes, but you'd win by showing him he failed as researcher. He didn't understand, was afraid of his own reflection. (Much like Stephen Colbert's view of Christianity, people are in general afraid of the void, and it reflects that back, but it is not intrinsically evil.) #warframe
Warframe Whispers Initial Impression: Time travel is always problematic, but this skips over that by explaining nothing and putting it off for the second part. They were nice enough to blur the naked kavat's butt. The story turns Albrecht into a scared little man, and the Man into a sympathetic extradimensional entity, who we are still supposed to dislike because he is terrifying but hasn't actually done anything to anybody, or is a literal reflection, who we are also still supposed to dislike for some reason. (The Destiny problem: if the lore explains nothing, it doesn't matter. If it explains everything, it probably isn't all that interesting. People shouldn't be afraid of the Man just because he's incomprehensible and off-putting. People still vote for Ted Cruz or DeSantis.) This expansion's "bit from somebody's dream we built this around" gets turned into a BL story, and then forgotten, except that involves some more emotion thing I don't think made any sense. (Addressing Loid's emotional deal stops the Man's Giant Dude? How? Why? The undefined incoming enemy is Loid's nightmares? Because I have a solution to that. We already have one NecroLoid.) (Perhaps related to my complaint about Duviri's emotions: if it had taken steps to help the player with their emotions, it would have been a more positive force than just intoning poetic bullshit about dragons. Just pointing out that men often repress their feelings until it breaks out in the form of endless waves of robots isn't as good as telling the player they probably need therapy.) The first bounty was also the first RTFM moment: find sarcophaguses, except they only spawn in one place on the map, and the map is huge so it's not like you'll get there by accident. They are also very hidden, and there is no manual. There's a super hard mode for those people that want it, and while the content is very high level, it's not steel path hard. I stopped using the grimoire immediately because the Boar Incarnon was shredding everything. I haven't gotten into the melee stuff yet. So it looks like it boils down to a giant grind for melee arcanes at the Space Lab of Dr. Moreau, which is OK, but nothing else really needed to be there. I didn't see any bugs, although you'll note I waited 4 days for the hot-fixes. (There is some thing that allows you to spawn a necramech? Just using the terminal doesn't do it. That might be me not seeing it.)(It's not like there aren't still issues: I was doing Solaris bounties for Nightwave, and on all the drone and trap missions, the target exploded almost immediately. I don't know why. It wasn't doing that last week when I was doing Narmer bounties to make up for the bond mods. Related: there are so many enemies in the new bounties that contagious bond will crash the game.) #warframe

SpyXFamily, UmaMusume has continued to do its thing. Death Play is still good, but the cast is getting ever larger without a goal in sight. Warframe Plague Star event: Is this where I got the exodia arcane? I did not have either of the blueprints, so maybe I ground that out the slow way, but I don't think so. In any event, it's a pain. I haven't seen any of the bugs, but the boss is slow to solo, at least with everything I've thrown at it, including uniaru, gotva, and the excellent horse-like lady, or soma and saryn's viral. I think I'll stick to the relics. I had more than 100 forma without grinding, aside from the assembler/daily login. I haven't seen a lich in months so they just piled up. On the other hand, while I was there I noticed I don't have 1 hunter and 2 gladiator mods, so I've been working on the ghouls instead, as it's a done week for duviri. Never did Narmer, Caliban, either, because it bugged out repeatedly. The ghouls only broke once in 30 Defector tries. (still no mod...) #warframe
I voted. There is a new system, and it is of course terrible. You check in by signing a screen on a stand so the signature is completely broken, get 2 pieces of paper and a card with a chip in it. The card then activates a screen, where you could, if you have better eyesight than I do, make selections on a virtual copy of the paper ballot. It then prints your ballot (double sided) in easily readable huge type on a billboard-sized, high-quality paper, which you then have to carry in public to stand in line in front of another machine, then insert the card and the paper, and have it jam, which is why there was a line. I have questions about the card's contents, the 'secret' ballot waving around in the breeze, exactly what sort of codes might be printed on the marked ballot and what happens to it, who thought all the additional paper was a good idea, or why any kind of delicate mechanical system would replace the previous and much more robust mechanical system, and why the UI is the (no longer available) paper ballot and not some thing designed to fit on a screen, or be readable. (It might have zoomed? I voted the correct column, so didn't need to be able to read names.) It seems like step after step has been added to the process because nobody wants to deal with encryption, or just leaving it alone. I would also like to complain about the Trump, "Fuck Joe Biden" plastered mega-truck parked outside the voting place, an elementary school. Think of the children. Also, the health insurance is up 13% for ""inflation"", and covers less, for "profit". It also tells you to go to '/getCovered', which is 404 and not the same thing as '/getcovered'. #complaining

Also, 'The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch' is consistently the worst ranked show by a large margin, which I disagree with. I wouldn't say it's good, but it's not even the worst show I'm watching. #anime
Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS Special 2 (the actual end!): I still don't understand everybody's motivations. It actually addresses that and the best they've got is 'I saw it in a vision, so I messed with everybody so they act according the mangavision'. I did like the action and the end, though. If you haven't seen any of it in the last 10 years, it is worth watching. It might have been more politically helpful if it had demonstrated that Eren's fascist party was based in solid ideals like not being euthanized or living in a concentration camp, but the response (genocide, being a greasy incel, firing rockets into Israel) was also way too far and needed to be stopped. That would have made Eren more real, but also actually bad, which they seemed to start but then couldn't commit to, or suggest any other way out. And the vision was necessary to help (maybe?) the founder, but did it? How? And what of the Human Instrumentality Project? That just went away? Welp, back to the cycle of unending tragedy. #anime
New WoW reveal: insufficient, although I might need to log in once every few years to keep my account fresh. It's nice that they are plotting lore more than one step at a time, and won't make you rep-grind alts, but the 4 different reps were the only thing to do with shadowlands. Unless you are maxing out professions, which is insanity with the last set of professions. I'm assuming nothing is going to fix the economy. Nobody seems to have had the thought that maybe running around all the time makes the game less fun. The dragons helped, but ultimately it was still point its nose in the right direction and wait. Wowhead still has the video that occupies most of the page as well, and the news, even with this news, is still mostly not the main game. #wow #games

I found a car tracker in the road. The road is in absolutely terrible shape, so it seems likely it bounced off then got crushed. It wasn't an Air Tag, but had an LED visible for CELL and GPS on the circuit board, and a magnetic case that clearly wasn't magnetic enough. I thought about taking the SIM card and seeing what the iPhone3 would do with it, but it is also probably governmental, given that a car's owner could get it attached to the power, and a stalker would buy an Air Tag.

Harriman: I should really never go there again. I went back to the south, after my planning for another northern trip found a bridge out. I've already forgotten the names, but I did the white brook trail, which was very nice, then the black trail which is never the one I think it is. It's very steep, and has a ladder on it. I'm not sure if I ever did that part of it before or if the ladder is new. There was not another person there, so I had a nice time. Unfortunately, the arch on my right foot started to hurt when impacted, which given Harriman's omni-present rocks, is every other step. I soaked it in a stream a couple of times, which helped me explore the levee overflow area. All that was under construction the last time. I saw some Spotted Lantern Fly moths, squashed 2, and I think some woman took my picture as I was leaving, like point blank, turned and snapped. I'd been on my best behavior, so I don't know why. Or else it was just a coincidental selfie. Because of the foot, I tried to go back via the Pine Meadow trail, which is less vertical, but not any shorter, has way more rocks, and The Public, so it was vastly more unpleasant. I was following a family of older people because I noticed they took a short-cut, so I didn't have to worry about the trail blazes, but we ran into some young-ish mega-autist who literally t-posed in the middle of a bridge and wouldn't move. My guides tried to go around through the stream, so he began to explain at length about something. I'm pretty sure they did not understand a thing about that encounter. We walked past him and his family, who I guess have given up trying to deal with that behavior. I annoyed some woman because I got off the Pine Meadow trail to sit down on a boulder and drink, but that turned out to be another trail. They are all just a bunch of rocks though. The lakes are tea-colored. I don't recall that, either. The northern one definitely wasn't 9 years ago. The brooks were very full. Some of the trails were running water. I did remember to bring a trash bag, but because there's no grocery bags any more, I had an actual trash bag, which was far to heavy to mount on the backpack, so I carried it and it stabbed me in the legs repeatedly. I had rivulets of blood, but was probably to too dehydrated to actually bleed. [I ain't got time to bleed.] I got another person thanking me for the trash and assuring me she also sometimes totally does that. I saw a dead fox on the way home, next to the retaining wall as 17 descends. It probably had nowhere to go as somebody swerved for it. #travel #masochism

MacOS 14, iOS 17 initial impressions: The Safari favorites is slightly wider and breaks muscle memory. Minor, but irritating and literally the first thing I noticed. The private browsing lock thing is nice, but also breaks how I was using it: just don't remember anything about random news sites. It's not a locked down secret, or even 'porn mode', as my anime image browsing is logged-in (ironically, so I can filter out the porn). The StandBy feature was the thing I was most looking forward to, but it doesn't seem to be able to display widgets and a digital clock at the same time. (I might be wrong about that. I got into it once, but haven't been able to activate it on purpose again. It's also supposed to have a dim mode? And stay on?) The functionality is good, except it seems to want me to unlock to show photos, but touching the sensor opens the homescreen, and there's still no indication of stacked widgets. I wanted to use it as a smart clock, not a hard to trigger second lock screen. It does not stay on, making it pointless. There's also 2 fewer Music widgets available. I wanted one of the missing 2. I don't have the screensaver turned on, so no comments about any of that. (Let me know when there is a MiA Nanachi specific one, or Unsounded.) I did move my 2 main widgets (calendar, reminder) out of the notifications and on to the laptop screen. It's off most of the time, but because it won't stay off, I'll still see them more. I did have to update BBEdit which wouldn't start, but as I haven't paid for it in years, I also haven't updated it in ages. I'm not liking this autocomplete thing. The weather app is really nice. Weather Underground is still better at showing the specific late night temps days in advance, but my biking needs are admittedly niche. The zoom mode I was using is gone? Summer 2023 Anime Review: Vending Machine is dumb. Masterful Cat is also pretty dumb but cuter. Gene of AI is less dumb, and I'd like more in this vein, but the points it makes are very irritating. (Unless the secret meta point is 'we trained these humanoids wrong as a joke'.) Undead Murder Farce's parade of public domain characters was the only decent new show, and possibly the only enjoyable use of rakugo. I dropped everything else new I was watching. It's possible I have simply seen too many anime, but then I'm also getting caught up on Akudama Drive, which is great. Mushoku Tensei is good, and I watched the first season. I thought isekai was bad to begin with, but to start with this, then devolve to things like Vending Machine. Sacrificial Princess is better than the first season, due partly to Lante's blep, and that it has an end with a climax and everything. I withdraw my previous complaint that it didn't have an arc or character development, but add the intro parts are slow. #anime

Brutal, and I felt like I was choking, but brief. He shares the office with a pediatrician, so there was a plush fox in the room. I'm still oozing blood, which isn't great, but not actually bleeding. I don't have much swelling, yet. I don't want to get dry socket, so I haven't eaten, and tried more gauze, but that just ended up bloody and I'm still oozing. Might see what full time Soylent will do to me. I might also have poison ivy on my wrist (from trash in town? wouldn't have been expecting it there), and a headache. The podcast device had a double set of episodes, so I deleted one of each, but then the battery was low, so I plugged in to the Mac, which saw the deleted episode, so removed both episodes from both playlists. Mostly. It did leave a couple, because it never does anything consistently but I lost half a week's podcasts. My mother got a new iPhone. There seems to be a lot of stuff that doesn't get copied with the backups. There was somebody else getting an iPad complaining that the copy didn't do any of his music or passwords. The staff wanted him to subscribe to Apple Music, and then something like 30 minutes later said he needed to re-sync the device with the computer with the music on it. So apparently Apple treats the iPad like I treat the phone, a high-risk device that nothing important can live on, a read-only consumer tool. (also, kind of the way I treat the media on the Mac. It lives on the Pi, because Apple Music broke stuff, and the video doesn't fit.) You can't set up ssh keys with that fancy glowing orb qr code thing? Device to device encrypted channel? What is the back-up backing up? (aside from the private keys, allowing Apple to decrypt your info?) I really do need a new keyboard, so those were tempting. (I'd have to pop the keycaps, though.) They also don't do sim swaps, apparently so AT&T can add in a fee. They did take my mother's current phone, possibly because she didn't mention that it gets so hot it has melted plastic. #complaining
Good Omens #2: I don't want to say meh, but I'm meh adjacent. There's a lot to enjoy, but basically nothing happens. Even things that could have had a bow slapped on top and shoved out the door go on forever until the characters themselves say you can't just have this story go the way you want, stop meddling, then something else gets launched out of left field, and then it ends. Very much the middle part of a trilogy. I did like the Terry Pratchett and Iain Banks novels in the background. #tv

Tiling systems is all one, Exposé all the other. My system, what I like to refer to as the 8-fold Path, is to put windows at each of the 4k's 8 corner points. (along the 2 edges next to the actual corner, which is a hot corner so you don't want to accidentally hit it.) The end result is even "laptop full screen" windows leave enough on the opposite side that I can see most/an edge of at least 7 other windows. This combined with app switching is enough, most of the time. It was better with the 1440, running 8 720 windows, but the modern browsing experience, and my degrading eyesight, means some windows are much larger than that. It was also better when Mac apps were more consistant about click to raise.
I went to see the WWII shooting range ruin again, explored the whole thing since I drove up and thus didn't have to bike back. There were only 3 other hikers, none that seemed like they go off the trail so I had the ruins entirely to myself, IYKWIM. I enjoyed it, though I don't understand why you'd need the scary tunnel if you have ranks of shooters all pointing in the same direction. They are trusting something to not shoot the people in the front, so why not the side? I also walked all the bike trails. I forgot to bring a trash bag again, not that it would have made any difference at the ruins. (The rest of the park was pretty clean. I picked up only a few things.) I also had an unexpectedly nice time just laying on a hot rock and breathing. I enjoyed the stream and dam in the other section as well.
Speaking of complaining, I would like to point out the Benjamin Brothers hardware store was very nice when I went to buy the replacement hoses. #notcomplaining

Anime Spring 2023 Review: My Home Hero is OK, never really wraps up a few things. Birdy Wing was boring during the school segment, but the insanity picked back up again. Ancient Magus Bride is entirely school segment, except for the tunnel hounds. The Marginal Service is bad. I'm still not sure why it exists. Is it a stupid kids show somebody snuck hundreds of movie references into? Or is it a movie gag comic that just doesn't have a viable A plot? X & Y is not great, not resolving into a real plot, although the general thought is the narrator is the crazy one. I'm glad they left the episodes at their original length and not re-edit it into 24m. (Don't do that again!) Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts is also bad, never achieving any kind of point or character growth, except possibly Anubis, in one episode. KamiKatsu is enjoyable trash. The Legendary Hero is Dead! is less trash, and less enjoyable, but acceptable. Magical Destroyers is heart-felt, but forgettable. (and the world it is defending is gone, anyway.) MASHLE is sugary empty calories. If only there was some sort food metaphor for that. Dead Mount Death Play is good, but ongoing. Hell's Paradise is great, and ongoing. For continued series, KKKBPunch continues to be terrible (but I still watched it), Golden Kamui continues to be great. The Abroad in Japan youtube channel visited some of these places. Konosuba was less nopan, more mean to Yunyun. I still haven't gotten to the HiDive shows with TotK and all, and now won't because it's expiring, and while the shows I watched there were really good, the site is just so bad. #anime

Soylent Update: it's been good. It gives me a nice feeling, is easy to prepare and clean up, and probably healthier than eating PB&J every day for 20 years. I haven't been living off it, though I might be more tempted in the full summer heat. I haven't developed toxic flatulence. (any more than usual.) My only complaint is the powder is, well, powdery, and a little cloud forms when dumped into a glass. I could be less miserly, or work on my dumping technique. I also tried the original flavor. Kind of vaguely oat-y. Hardly objectionable, but I'll try the various flavor packets.

That firefighters keep dumping water on it isn't the battery's fault. (Put a blanket over it!) While I agree the only solution is a new (or really old) urbanism, a really light and efficient, simplified electric car addresses many of these issues.

Getting images off an iPhone seems to have become noticeably worse, and not just that I had to reboot to get it to work at all. There's 2 of every image, and they are all HEIC, which, fine, but the jpeg Preview produces from that is the same size! The next gen format saves nothing? It's just irritating. WebP is still 1/4th the size, and so far as I can see, identical.
The Orville: while house-sitting, I've been watching Hulu. It is pretty nice Star Trek, but I also didn't bother to watch all of it. Maybe I'm just cranky because I haven't been heating the house.
Cityscapes: Checking out the new Apple Arcade games in a continued effort to stop playing Mini Motorways. It's not SimCity. The UI seems designed to irritate and it still has the FtP hooks. Also it crashed the Mac, or at least the Mac crashed hard while it was running. Despite the obvious issues with its logic (like factories needing people right next to people needing factories), I'd still like to play it, but it just dies in a variety of ways.
Heat: part of Netflix's attempt to have more things that don't suck? Somebody pointed out they have far less titles than the average Blockbuster, and almost nothing older than 10 years, but then this and The Birds showed up. I don't think I actually ever saw this, but was familiar with it in the "seen the Simpsons parody" way. I should have seen this as a double bill with Leon. #tv

Aptera Update: Considering CarPlay/Android Auto, not confirmed, but seemed like they were relying on that for audio/map. (Or AOC suggests Android Automotive, with just 1 Aptera authored charge status app, the rest Google, and then perhaps also CP/AA. Aptera is turning loose the auto ui company it merged with, after not doing anything public.) If it does Android Automotive, maybe shrink the screen, add an eye-level mount for the phone? AAmotive has very limited apps, and it is not like a car sized tablet. They are also considering not using a silicon carbide inverter, because the power per 3 engines doesn't have nearly the same amount of loss as a high energy single motor, and silicon carbide is 10x the cost. It's nice that they are looking at every last detail to make the vehicle cheaper, but not just cutting to the bone. (to the point it doesn't work, looking at you, Solo.) Duviri alternate idea I had waiting for a pot to boil: The mind space is yours, but from a third timeline, where you mastered the void powers, but not your sanity. You regret the horrible things you did to the adults and to the other children, but can't turn time back any farther than after the Zarimann's jump, so you are trapped going back and forth reliving your atrocities, until Tenshin and the Drifter gets pulled in from the universe next door, and then they pull in the Tenno and frames from the 'correct' universe next to that. You then fix the sanity issue by reintegrating (or disintegrating) your alt-self in a final battle that has some sort of emotional resonance or closure, but keep the undercroft to pull items out of your own universe. This might also be a clue for the Man in the Wall, which might be yet another version of you with way more mastery of the void, but much less sanity. #warframe

Duviri Day 2: I found the circuit and the rewards. That's what I get for not leaving the cave yesterday. It bugged out on me so I'm afraid to do a long run in it. [It can't go longer than 3 rounds] It did seem fun and new, picking up random weapons and having a go with it. This is actually how I've been playing, up until now when I've nearly run out of things to master. Related, may need to switch to a leveling focus school because it gives lots of focus, but to the school, not the lens. Did not get into the steel path yet. Also got the True Master, blessed everybody already. It doesn't take as long if you sit on the air tower spawns, click them right off. #games #warframe

Warframe Duviri Initial impression: meh. Thrax (isn't there already an enemy type named that? Or did I already forget his name?) is a total non-entity. At no point was I horrified or physically repulsed. The story line is unfinished? A meta-commentary on the angry nerds who choose to stay in their safe place playing with their broken dolls, refusing to let the game change? It's not comparable to the previous stories. (Zarimann is literally looming over the proceedings.) They are still trying to make Drifter combat a thing. People have said its the mobile gaming thing, a couple taps per enemy. So, fine, but why cram that in to the main game? It does not seem good that all the new stuff is moving away from the basic Space Ninja action or MR loop. The new bounties are a pain in the ass. I failed at 6/6 because I didn't see how to kill the space worm and I died 3 times, which was all I had left because I don't think it reset. (solo, which might be bad for new content) I don't remember how to set that back to Circuit. I didn't see Incarnon weapons (except something for plat) or new rewards. There are a couple of bugs or display issues, like "walk into the light", but there's no light except right as you mirror-walk into it a giant pillar of purple light appears. The emotion based story is kind of basic and dumb for a sci-fi body horror franchise. I liked that it connected to the Dormizone, and ... that's about it. I would like it if it involved the random assortment of stuff with the no/default mods that you have to try your best with, but it used my primes, my mods, including leaving off a stance mod I don't have. The point in making it basic would be getting rid of that setup, right? Require more skill and adaptation, not looking up builds? I'd do it if it is easier than the Rot-C 1% grinds to get random old frames, but I didn't see how to get anything. I don't know what I'm doing. A lot of this seemed to be for new players, which is a complete failure. Unrelated but something in the proceedings got me to MR 30, which might be considered a natural endpoint to the game. I still have to endure that test. I did half in the Test with power roll Mesa, but good grief. Still, I'm Daddy's little meat grinder. #games #warframe
I tried OpenEmu in the post-WoW, pre-Duviri, TotK lul. Old games are so bad. Part of that is not having the instructions, which was the fashion of the times. I didn't notice there was a different item and inventory button in Shadowrun so it took forever to equip the gun, for example, but it still didn't have the smooth shoot/search/loot/learn cycle of your CP2077's, even though I think it did have more lore crammed into objects. #games

These numbers might make it a little too easy to pooh-pooh the new Prius Prime's solar roof. We don't entirely agree. If the reason to choose the Prime over the regular Prius is its electric driving potential, then features that optimize that could make sense. It was always cool to start the car and see the range had risen without us really doing anything. We literally just parked outside. And even if four miles was the best daily addition we saw, that's four fewer miles that we needed to wait for the battery to gain while plugged in.
The 2023 Prius Prime's solar roof isn't a game changer, but its ability to make sun-baked bonus miles can come in handy—your results will vary.
But what if it was a game changer at 20 miles a day? That's the average commute. What about 30? 40? The Prime is 44 miles per 14kW, so about 1/3 an aptera. (An aptera being the unit of ideal efficiency. ;) Also twice the weight. #aptera

Winter 2023 Anime Review: Generally disappointing. The series I had the most hype for didn't deliver, and were a little annoying. Specifically, Kaina of the Great Snow Sea and The Fire Hunter. Kaina was possibly too YA or too Japanese, Fire Hunter was too Flowers of Evil. It looks nice, but ultimately collapses. At least this does stuff in the last episode, then announces a second season, which is better than doing nothing then begging for money to make more. Saving 80,000 Gold did eventually shoot orcs with guns, but it wasn't worth the wait. HIGH CARD, ONIMAI, Ningen Fushin plodded through their paces. Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess (I'm making an effort to write out the full titles for easier searching, and I still can't get through the entire thing...) did a lot of stuff, but seemed so flat none of it mattered. That girl is a vampire now? Was that even a thing? Doesn't matter, now she's a maid. I liked all of the characters in The tale of outcasts except for the MC. NieR missed several episodes and is nowhere near ending, but also ends the show after every closing credits, so I can't say it doesn't have closure. Handyman Saitou in another world was decent. The zaniness and total lack of plot kept it moving, balanced the fact that nothing actually happened. The shows I liked the most were Tomo-chan is a Girl! (cliched, but it moves along), Buddy Daddies (never developed a plot or character, but was nice enough to look at), and Revenger, which is nice to look at and also scores highly on the Convoluted Plot and Sheer Insanity and Bad End scales. I once described the traditional Japanese anime themes as poverty, depression, and barely dressed children of indeterminate gender. 3/3! #anime

I was trying to pull multimedia clips off a 1993 era Mac backup on the PiNAS. `macbinary decode ` was getting the images, and if it was a jpeg or gif, modern MacOS is actually recognizing it, but it has problems with most (but not all!) of the sound clips. Obviously, the thing I most wanted was the M41-A sound clips to add to a Nerf video. It was decoding and consistently reporting a file size in the Finder, but 0 in the terminal. The -o option didn't help either. There were also a couple Quicktime movies it recognized on its own, but refused to open. My old Mac apps are a complete waste, but a calendar app that could do arbitrary multi-events might still be nice. (and display a list of upcoming events, which is still not something Calendar can do.) #mac #aliens

Sion did not make their 100m€ goal. This is unfortunate, but they did get about 50m€ to sign up. Thats all Aptera wants, so that much money is out there. The Sion might have been better served by making the car as light as possible, then selling the solar panel as an integrated solar garage. (The solar DC power thing I want to add to my Aptera as a camping option, because solar panels are so much cheaper than batteries or getting the grid to remote locations. You could do this with any solar power system, with the waste of a double inverter, but they are often over-priced, or require you to watch a great many Youtube videos to finally remember amps and watts and volts and such, and even then I'd probably still kill myself.) Even their claimed solar power per week was what Aptera claimed per 2 days. Why bother? Especially as the side panels are going to get dinged. Aptera was made as efficient as possible, then added the panels because they started to make sense, not the other way around. (Although, googling just now shows at least one solar panel installer recommending dumping power into the grid during peak day prices, then charging using cheaper overnight prices. That does require the grid inverter, while my scheme does not. On the other hand, the grid will take as many solar panels as you can throw at it, while the car would not. I no longer have a [Deeply Concerned] about Aptera's charging. They put it in! Literally over a weekend! Because people complained, loudly. That is quite responsive. (And the video is much more natural!) Admittedly, it was already in the plans, but left out without a plug necessary to support it (given any normal plug bigger than Tesla's wouldn't fit on a car with no flat surfaces). Which seemed like a odd decision to then continue to leave it out, given that Tesla opened up their plug, and the plug's adapter ecosystem. Even if the ideal use case for the car (never charge daily commuter in a temperate, sunny climate) doesn't require it and it isn't great for the batteries in any car. Still unknown about Supercharger access, which would be nice for cross country trips, but not necessary. Definitely not included is the DC solar Msomething connectors. That would be nice for at-home DC charging, but a very niche use-case for people with a driveway and adjacent solar panels, or a garage with the panels on top. I feel less depressed. It's been completely cloudy for weeks now, and will be for the foreseeable future. That's not good weather for me or an Aptera. [The sun came out the next day. It's a sign.] Also still not switching to Launch Edition because of the 3rd engine. (Unless they need me to!) How hard would it be to take out an engine? You can't just unplug it because of the magnets. OR: how hard would it be to hijack the regenerative brake line on the engine-less 3rd wheel to add DC solar power input into the wheel well or the ventral fin? It already expects variable voltage, high power input, right? Now I'm tempted to switch just to get the extra electronics inside for future use. "Aptera's Launch Edition | Live Webinar": awkwardly produced (I need them to make cars, not live videos), didn't cover anything new (well, maybe the accessory hooks): they still need money, no production for at least 9 months, a lot of things still not nailed down. It's officially 87.6" wide, which isn't great, but not new. The parking sensors moved off the pods. Many of the people in the chat are idiots. Still very nervous after the Arcimoto FUV's failure to launch (and they got as far as making a vehicle!), plus 'real' cars are getting down in price. Even though I want a car so I can feel I can get out of my rut, I'm not switching to the launch model. I don't want the 3wd, because it increases takeoff speed but decreases efficiency. I don't really care about the speakers. I have a [Deeply Concerned] about the charging. It would be about 7 hours 0-100% but how long would it take to drive 600 real miles? With the AC on? An overnight charge? A long lunch and dinner? Or 300, 5 hours, then 300, then overnight? 10 hours a day on the road, with a 5 hour break, 9 hours of sleep? Assuming charging lines up like that? I could live with that, but it's not what attracted me to a car with high efficiency and massive range, and a quick charging small battery. How many stops would it take to get cross country? And are there campgrounds in the necessary places? Is there even still a tent option? #aptera

Project Binchoustan Update: I have become resigned to getting a car before getting a shack (necessary to repeatedly check out the remote areas, in order to determine your next door neighbor isn't Beelzebub, Lord of Flies, or that the neighborhood down the road a bit didn't wash away in a storm. (I still might consider it. I'll be dead by the time it's underwater, anyway.)), and probably also that I'll never be able to get a shack. The 2 price increases during The Time of Covid and The Transitory Inflation are just too big, and I'm too afraid of losing investment income that I'll need to deal with the inflation (or airquotes ""inflation"", because it's obvious companies just jacked up prices and pocketed it). The EV I want is still an Aptera, so I'm waiting on that to get to my place in the line, or even start the assembly line. The Aptera at least will let me go car camping, so I could experience more of the country cheaply while finding a place that might have a shack, and then doing all the due diligence on the area.

A new theme, at last. Zima Blue won't take over 99% of the screen, although I maybe already have dismantled my higher functions so I can just happily pick up trash, the task I was made for, also the most fun thing I did last summer. Mysterious font created by Jon for the ancient fox text from Tunic. The text displayed is notably not the Tunic phonetic system, as that would make it harder to grep the site's source files for movies I might have watched, which is this site's primary purpose. I was considering making each article have its own random translate text trigger, but that was probably too unreadable, even for me. It's bad enough that the secret button is not near any deep links, like all the guids I just put in for the rss. I also wanted to do something like Unsounded's journal pages (now no longer canon), but don't have the effort and skill needed for that. I wanted to use the "Made in Abyss" font, have this be a balloon message from the depths of the Abyss that you could translate entry by entry. None of the old otf or ttf fonts worked, plus they don't have a full Roman alphabet (why would they?).
